Trinity stepped into the meeting room and was unsurprised to see every seat taken except the one at the head of the table where she saw her father's face projected on the wall. Hushed voices mingled with the sounds of chairs scraping against the floor as she walked swiftly toward the long table at the front.
Viktor was three chairs down, bundled up in thick clothing that was clearly used to transport him safely in the afternoon light. He looked up at her, his eyes red from lack of sleep and a snarl on his lips. Whoever woke him up was hopefully all right.
He stood and gestured for her to come and take his seat. More and more, he surprised her. He had been so very callous when they'd met on the street, but controlled and appropriate the meetings after. Only to linger in her thoughts after fucking her so completely she hadn't been able to focus on anything when he was present except the accidental fuck that had proven she could trust him, but that he also held appeal for her.
Trinity sat, ignoring the way she wanted to lean against Viktor when he moved to stand behind her. Fingers curling around the armrest, she braced herself for what was likely going to exterminate the possible alliance. From her seat, Trinity could see every single one of the resistance leaders.
"Daughter," her father gave a nod, a small smile slipping temporarily over his lips. "I am getting tired of seeing you over a screen. Hopefully, this meeting can end with your commitment to coming home."
Her heart fluttered in her chest. Perhaps she'd been wrong after all. The idea that she may have secured the first ever true alliance with an entire clan set her buzzing, creating an obnoxious deterrent from listening.
"We have an important discussion to begin," Darius cleared his throat and set his dark stare just behind Trinity. "Viktor, I cannot tell you how proud I am to know that at some point, somehow, you found the Shadow Guard appealing." His voice was tight but laced with hope. "We understand your desire to bring your kind into our fold, but we cannot force donors. If vampires join us, it must be their choice. For a better world â for everyone. This is what we ask of all who join. Giving you more would create tension within our ranks. I know you've had my daughter working to go around this, but this is the final word."
A wave of disappointment washed over Trinity, sinking her heart into the pit of her stomach. She understood and even agreed with her father's position, but it also meant that all of her hard work and efforts in the past few weeks had led to nothing. It was a wasted effort, leaving her feeling empty and defeated.
She didn't dare look behind her at the vampire, but she felt his body move as he nodded and couldn't resist seeing if he was about to go on a killing spree.
